My plan for the presentation is to share with you a case study of how social media and online games have been used in The Netherlands to successfully motivate school students to spend more time on (after-school) learning activities/homework. And how this has helped them improve their grades. There are many exciting take-aways but if there are specific areas you'd like to focus on please let me know. I will circulate my slides later this week.

Free Online Learning Initiative

The objectives of this education project are to fill the gaps in the quality of the global education system. OLK12 would like to showcase a technological model at the conference. The infrastructure will provide an online teaching and learning environment in which all attending the conference will be able to participate. Delegates will be able to register their own schools for the free online teaching and learning or recommend other educational institutions. Outcomes of this initiative will be measured throughout the year and brought forward in next year's conference, judging the success and stumbling blocks of this open education initiative.
This is how it will work. OLK12 will create an online infrastructure, a prototype is already available. It can be viewed by going to the following website: http://64.72.29.139/portal
. Log in as student1 and password is student1. This environment provides courseware in the form of free video lectures, audio podcasts, and digitized textbooks online. These lectures are instructor led. Models are available in which instructors can customize and use something existing. OLK12 will provide a leading role in coordinating the instructor to his or her preferred method of lecture. The software also has the ability to create and showcase student work portfolios. First, teachers are able to assess and evaluate student abilities, working with them to ensure competencies have been met. Then, the student is able to create a portfolio based on their best work to share with other academic institutions as well as potential employers.
OLK12 will request delegates to participate either in the form of their institution or resources to this open education initiative either themselves or by referring other educational institutions. OLK12 will need the help of conference coordinators and clients to promote and request the enrollment of the delegates.
With this initiative a school in a developed nation will undertake a formidable task of providing education to schools in undeveloped nations. For example, a school in the United States or Australia or New Zealand can use this infrastructure to teach students in the rural areas of India, South Africa, and other such countries.
OLK12 realizes there can be some hurdles and barriers (such as internet accessibility, laptop availability) and so will work with the backing of the Education Project and other organizations such as One Laptop per Child, based in Boston, USA and the Malinda Gates Foundation, etc.

This proposed project will bring the practical perspective to the outcome of the conference. It will prove and generate interest and participation of additional institutions and resources for future conference participation.
